How to Design for Hook Boxes

We offer many different-sized hook boxes that fit many different types of cards and components. You can see our hook boxes here.

When designing a hook box image, you will be designing the outside of the box, and the optional inside. Here are the main parts of a hook box template you should be aware of:

A - Bleed
Bleed is the grey area where your background should extent into by at least 1/8th inch. Bleed helps ensure that if you have drift, you will not have a white edge.

B.a - Outside Hook
The hook facing the left, that is solid white is the hook for the outside of the box.

B.b - Inside Hook
The hook facing to the right, that is semi-transparent, is the hook for the inside of the hook box.

C - Upper Flap
This is the flat that will fold backwards, and lay on top of the bottom flat (E), with the hook (B) going inside the slot (G). Design this upside down for the outside of the box, so it is upright and in the same orientation of the face.

D - Cover Face/Inside Center
This is the front face of your box, and is where you would put your game logo. When designing the inside, this would be the center box.

E - Lower Flap
This is the bottom flat that will flip backwards and lay under the Upper Flap (C). Design this upside down for the outside of the box, so it is upright and in the same orientation of the face.

F - Outer Flaps
These flaps are folded backwards and will be under both the Upper (C) and Lower Flaps (E).

G - Hook Slot
This is the slot that is cut for the hook to grab onto. This slot has its own safe zone, to ensure nothing you add here gets cut off.

H - Cut Line
This is where the hook box will be cut.

I - Safe Zone
This line shows you where you need to keep your information, so it does not get cut off. Drift can be up to 1/8th inch, so anything inside this safe zone is clear from being cut, while anything outside of it, could be cut off.

J - Fold Lines
These lines delineate where the hook box will be folded.

It is recommended to add an image to show your customers how to open their hook box. You can see an example of this on the outside image above. Here is a PNG file you can use on your hook boxes.
